Platelet-rich plasma therapy–nicknamed PRP therapy–is one of today’s most innovative and effective treatments for musculoskeletal injury, pain, and inflammation. Harnessing the body’s own ability to regenerate healthy tissue and to heal, PRP therapy is non-surgical, comfortable, and highly effective. Here’s what you can expect when you start PRP therapy.
An In-Office Consultation at NIVA Health
Many patients who wish to explore platelet-rich plasma therapy begin with an in-office consultation with one of our experienced healthcare providers. You’ll review your symptoms and medical history, particularly musculoskeletal injuries and degenerative conditions, such as tendonitis and arthritis. Your provider will assess the area of concern and determine if platelet-rich plasma could be effective for you, your health, and your desired outcomes.
Regenerative medicine specialists, orthopedic physicians, and sports medicine doctors use platelet-rich plasma therapy for a wide array of health-related and aesthetic conditions, including:
- Torn ACL in the knee
- Plantar fasciitis in the arch of the foot
- Iliotibial band syndrome in the outer aspect of the leg
- Shin splints
- Tennis elbow
- Muscular strains
- Joint sprains
- Osteoarthritis pain in the knee and back
- Surgical wounds
Amazingly, PRP therapy also has proven results in restoration of hair loss due to thinning, chemotherapy, and childbirth.
Your PRP treatment plan will be individualized according to your condition and overall health needs. In general, people with orthopedic conditions require a limited number of injections, usually spaced months apart. Hair loss patients require more injections–usually every year to year and a half apart to maintain their hair regrowth results for the long term.
What to Expect From PRP Therapy
PRP therapy is easy on the patient. Your doctor will perform a simple blood draw and spin the sample in a laboratory centrifuge to separate the liquid part of the blood–plasma–from the components called platelets. Platelets contain blood-clotting factors as well as growth and tissue regeneration factors which speed healing and reduce pain and inflammation.
Once separated, the platelets are highly concentrated and injected back into your area of injury. The platelet count is ten times normal, thus multiplying the healing and regenerative properties contained in your blood.
The doctor then applies a small bandage to the site, and you’re ready to go. Hair regrowth patients may have some limited redness, soreness and swelling on the injection sites on their scalps, but these symptoms resolve fairly rapidly.
