Being the largest joint in your body, your knee takes the brunt of the movements you make every day. It stands to reason that your knee is highly susceptible to conditions and injuries, which can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness.
Fortunately, there are many things you can do to help minimize your risk of developing knee problems—and they don’t require a lot of effort. Here are a few, simple tips from our highly qualified multispecialty physicians here at NIVA Health, aimed at helping you avoid knee pain.
1.) Stretch and exercise your leg muscles.
Strengthening your quads and hamstrings (groups of muscles that run along the back of your thighs) help your knees remain flexible; enable your knees, legs, hips, and back to function properly; effectively support your weight; and protect you from injuries.
To stretch and strengthen them, perform simple leg lifts and side-leg raises before and after each workout. Your exercise program could also incorporate cycling, walking, and/or swimming/water aerobics.
2.) Wear well-fitting shoes.
Too tight or too loose—whichever the case, the wrong shoes will place undue pressure on your knee. Ill-fitting shoes can also throw off your balance.
Investing in good-quality and comfortable work shoes, cross-trainers, running shoes, and other types of footwear is sure to pay you dividends.
3.) Maintain your weight.
Excess weight puts pressure on your knees, eventually causing chronic pain and other complications, such as osteoarthritis (OA).
Eating healthy and engaging in regular physical activity can help you achieve a weight that’s appropriate for your age and height.
4.) Mix up your exercise routine.
By mixing up your exercise routine, you get to give your joints, ligaments, and muscles time to rest and recover before engaging them again. In contrast, putting continuous and repetitive strain on your knee can put you at a greater risk of sustaining injuries and developing a chronic problem.
